Yoga Equipment Guide

Yoga equipment refers to the various tools and accessories used during a yoga practice. These can include yoga mats, blocks, straps, blankets, bolsters, and meditation cushions.

If you are starting out in yoga the main thing to bring is you. Special clothes or equipment will not improve your yoga experience - despite what the manufacturers say! To start just bring yourself, a mat, some comfortable clothes and some water.

What to wear

Pretty much anything goes in a yoga class and there really is no need for special clothing. Loose comfortable 'sporty' clothes that you can move about in are best. You will get warm so layers are useful. Yoga is usually done barefoot but you can get get yoga socks if your feet are not ready to meet the world! A water bottle is handy too

Mats

You are going to get up close and personal with your mat so most people prefer to bring their own. These can be bought online or at supermarkets fairly cheaply - under £15 for a basic one. If you have sore knees to want a bit of extra padding then you might want to pay a little more and get a thicker one

That sleeping mat that the kids had for Scouts / Guides / DofE is fine to start with (although please remove any sheep poo before use!)

If your mat starts to get a bit whiffy then a quick spray with a furniture odour remover works wonders

Accessories

Blocks, straps, wheels, bolsters.......there are lots of accessories that you can use to help you with your yoga. A good studio will provide these and a teacher can help you choose what is right for you as your practise develops
